Debra Jean Johnson is an award-winning Hair and Wig Department Head with more than three decades of experience across feature films, premium television, streaming productions, and theatre. Recognised for her expertise in period styling, wig design, character-driven hair creation, and large-scale departmental leadership, she has built a distinguished international career working with some of the industry’s most respected directors, studios, and production companies.

Her recent credits include HBO’s Welcome to Derry, Amazon/Sony’s Vought Rising, Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy, Warner Bros.’ Titans, NBC’s 12 Monkeys, CW’s Superman & Lois, Disney’s Descendants 2, and Fox’s Rocky Horror Picture Show. Her feature film work includes Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy, Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica, Fernando Meirelles’ Blindness, Deepa Mehta’s Earth, Denys Arcand’s Testament, and John Cameron Mitchell’s cult classic Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with internationally acclaimed performers including Julianne Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Robin Wright, Gael García Bernal, Isabella Rossellini, Martha Henry, and Liza Minnelli.

Debra’s work has received significant industry recognition, including a Canadian Screen Award for Elizabeth Rex, a Canadian Screen Award nomination for The Exchange, an Emmy nomination for Jupiter’s Legacy, and a Guild Award nomination for Rocky Horror Picture Show. She is recognised not only for technical excellence and visual precision, but also for her ability to lead highly collaborative departments within demanding production environments.

Originally trained at the prestigious Vidal Sassoon Academy in London, England, Debra further refined her expertise in wig-making and theatrical hair design at the renowned Stratford Festival, where she supervised wigs and make-up for the Tom Patterson Theatre. This combination of classical training and extensive on-set experience has made her particularly sought after for productions requiring sophisticated period styling, transformative character work, avant-garde design, and technically complex wig construction across historical, fantasy, and contemporary settings.
